Man arrested attempting to smuggle drugs into Maafushi Prison

Police arrested a 27-year-old man for attempting to smuggle drugs into Maafushi Prison on Sunday.

Maldives Correctional Service notified the police that a man who arrived at the prison for a family visit at 10 00 hours was suspected to be in possession of drugs.

Police officers stationed on the island arrived at Maafushi Prison and screened the man. The search yielded seven packages of drugs which were wrapped with cellophane and rubber.

Maafushi Magistrate Court remanded the man for 13 days.

A 21-year-old foreigner was also arrested on Saturday for possessing drugs during an operation carried out by the Drug Enforcement Department. The police also confiscated drugs from a foreigner upon his entry into the country. The Criminal Court has remanded these two individuals for a 15-day period.
