The Supreme Court on Monday held a preliminary hearing on the leadership dispute case of opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

The case, which seeks to hand over PPM's leadership from former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom back to his estranged half-brother and former president, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, was filed at the Civil Court by a civilian member of the party. The Civil Court later forwarded the case file to the apex court.

Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) confirmed the preliminary hearing, which was held for the submission of necessary documents for the trial.

Amidst the long delay in the case, former President Yameen and PPM's leadership are currently working to form a new political party, People's National Congress (PNC).

Meanwhile, the top court is also looking into another case pertaining to PPM's Congress, in which Yameen was appointed party leader.

Although the Elections Commission had rejected the decisions taken during PPM's Congress, the High Court had ruled in the party's favour, a verdict that EC appealed at the Supreme Court.
