Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Saturday slammed rise in electricity tariff and described the government's electoral pledge of lower electricity tariffs as a complete failure.

MDP in a statement also said the way electricity was being provided by the government was extremely detrimental to the country's economy.

The party also expressed concern over the recent increase of electricity charges for large enterprises following the new electricity tariff rates introduced for businesses.

The statement said the hike for large businesses had been imposed before the government had reversed the tariff hike for households last January.

MDP also pointed out that the added burden on businesses would trickle down to the people on a consumer level.
