The Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) opened applications late Saturday for candidates interested in contesting in the upcoming parliamentary election with MRM backing.

MRM tweeted that candidates who wished to contest for a parliamentary seat in April should call or text 7965444 before January 10 to notify them.

Former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom formed MRM after his dismissal from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), which was previously the ruling party. Although Maumoon’s estranged half-brother former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom became PPM's leader, the legal dispute over the party's leadership remains unresolved.

MRM is currently a part of the ruling coalition government which defeated PPM in the presidential election of 2018.

A previously discussed seat-sharing agreement between the coalition parties was abandoned when Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) decided to contest for all 87 seats. The remaining coalition members are Jumhooree Party (JP) and Adhaalath Party.
