Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, who was recently shifted from house arrest to Maafushi Prison, was rushed to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on Saturday evening.

Abdulla Yameen Rasheed, the deputy leader of Adeeb's new political party Maldives Third Way Democrats (MTD), confirmed that the former vice president was brought to capital Male and is currently receiving emergency treatment at IGMH.

"His family members are also here. But we haven't received any information from the doctors yet," said Yameen from the hospital.

Adeeb was transferred back to prison last Wednesday. Following the shift, Maldives Correctional Service stated earlier on Saturday that Adeeb was placed in a special protection unit suitable for a medical patient.

Adeeb, who is serving a hefty 33-year jail sentence, was transferred to house arrest under the suggestion of his doctor for a “homely environment” on October 24, 2018. Adeeb was hospitalized on November 9, 2018, and transferred to house arrest the same month, on the 27th.

He was shifted back to Maafushi Prison as his doctor did not extend his advice beyond December 24, according to Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla.

However, following his transfer back to prison, his wife claimed that Adeeb was released on house arrest until January 28, and that his doctor had advised 6-8 weeks with his family for his recovery after surgery.

She has filed a case with the Human Rights Commission of Maldives.
