Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdullah, revealed on Wednesday that there are serious issues regarding the Yemeni national who has been detained since last year without any charges or trials.

The Yemeni was married to a local woman and was living in Maldives when he was arrested.

In a news conference held at the Home Ministry, Imran noted that the information shared the public regarding this matter so far was not entirely accurate.

The Minister emphasized that there were some serious issues with the detaining of the Yemeni man, and the public was misinformed about the situation.

Yasir Yahyaa Salih was a teacher in the capital when he was arrested in 2017 following a court order. Maldives Police Service, at the time, stated that he was to be handed over to Maldives Immigration for deportation after the arrest.

However, he is currently in Hulhumale’ Detention Centre under the custody of Maldives Correctional Services.

Yasir’s wife issued a statement last August expressing concern about the way Yasir was being treated while under arrest. The public was only made aware of the situation through the statement issued by Yasir’s wife.

The Home Minister noted that further details about Yasir would be revealed later after proper discussion regarding the extent of information that could be revealed to the public without threatening national security.

"Going public with the information we know might challenge the peace and harmony as well as the security of citizens", the minister further said.

Yasir was arrested during a time when the King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, was scheduled to visit Maldives. However, the trip was later cancelled.
