State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Haleel, on Monday, announced that Maldivians would be able to travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) without acquiring a visa, starting from January 1, 2019.

State Minister Haleel stated that any individual who held a valid diplomatic, official or ordinary passport would be granted a one-month visa upon entry into the UAE.

According to the state minister, the UAE has already made all the necessary arrangements and informed airlines of the changes in procedure.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid announced that Maldivians would be allowed to travel to the UAE without a visa, during his state visit to the country.

State Minister Haleel also revealed that the foreign ministry was currently working to attain visa-free access to other nations.

Maldives recently signed a visa agreement with India, enabling Maldivians to attain medical, business, and tourist visas to the neighbouring country easily.

Many locals experienced difficulties in attaining visas to India during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as relations between the two countries were strained during the period.
