Managing Director of Maldives Media and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Thoyyib Mohamed, on Thursday, announced that cultural tourism would be promoted at ITB Berlin (Internationale Tourismus-Börse Berlin) in 2019.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the first Guesthouse Symposium in Maldives, Thoyyib asserted that cultural displays would be part of the country’s exhibition at ITB Berlin which is scheduled for March 6-10, 2019. This will include ‘bodumas’, a large fish woven out of coconut palm fronds used in local Eid Celebrations.

Thoyyib also stated that Maldivian culture would be a more prominent aspect in the promotion of tourism.

According to the Managing Director, the strategy of MMPRC would be based on promoting guesthouses, resorts, hotels and liveaboards. MMPRC has planned several activities to promote these four services.

Marketing seminars will be held in 11 different locations in Maldives so that the entire country receives coverage, stated MMPRC. In addition, the corporation will collaborate with social media activists and travel writers to promote Maldives as a travel destination. A travel writers conference will be hosted with 30 writers.

Thoyyib also expressed the need to establish efficient facilities such as water and sewerage systems in local islands to stimulate demands for local guesthouses.

A total of MVR 157 million has been allocated for tourism promotion in the 2019 State Budget.
