Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure has halted construction work at three sites in capital Male' over lack of safety measures.

National Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam disclosed that the ministry concluded inspections of 163 construction sites by the end of Wednesday, according to local media Mihaaru.

He shared that stop orders were issued to three sites over lack of adequate safety measures, while seven other sites require further inspection.

Aslam added that the ministry's survey teams will also inspect old buildings in the future.

He went on to say that the ministry has almost completed the Building Code, as per the Construction Act, which will be submitted to the Attorney General's Office next month.

"[The Building Code] should have been completed by last March, in truth. Most of it has been compiled by now, and we hope to send it to the AG Office in January".

The National Planning Ministry launched inspections of safety measures at construction sites in the capital, after a young girl tragically passed away after a cement bag fell on her from the fifth storey of a building last Sunday. Born to a family of Bangladeshi doctors, Rawshan Jian was receiving treatment in intensive care when she succumbed to her injuries the following day.
