The United States of America sent an envoy on Thursday, seeking to further investigate areas that require technical assistance in Maldives.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the envoy consists of members from the American Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the U.S. Department of State and the U.S Department of Commerce.

The United States plans to provide assistance to the sectors of Public Financial Management, Rule of Law, Good Governance and Human Rights. The US diplomats are currently visiting with the relevant administrative bodies.

The members of the U.S Department of Commerce are scheduled to meet with the Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure, Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Finance and Treasury, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Environment, as well as the members of the Attorney General’s Office.

Led by the US Department of State's Rule of Law Advisor Stephen Anderson, the party has already met with members from the Prosecutor General’s Office, Maldives Police Service, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

In addition, they will also be meeting with the members of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), as well as the newly-formed Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances.

Reportedly, the discussions will highlight issues concerning the sectors of Law Reform, Transitional Justice and Rule of Law.

The objective of the American team's visit to Maldives is to continue the dialogue initiated by the American Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives Alaina B. Teplitz, during her recent visit to Maldives in November 2018.
