Parliamentary Representative for Velidhoo constituency Abdulla Yameen Rasheed, on Wednesday, joined the newly formed Maldives Third Way Democrats (MTD), having revoked his membership from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

At a press conference held by MTD, Yameen announced his intention to contest in the upcoming parliamentary election as an MTD candidate. The MP stated that he had not yet decided which constituency he would run for.

Although the Velidhoo MP resigned from PPM on Tuesday, the party had also issued approval for Yameen to contest on behalf of PPM.

Despite having shifted his political allegiance to PPM in 2015, Yameen was initially elected to the parliament in 2014 as a representative of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

MTD is yet to be officially registered at the Elections Commission, which authorized its formation in November. The party has successfully attained 3,000 members, however, MTD membership must grow by an additional 7,000 before it qualifies for state funding under the Political Parties Act.

The first member to join MTD was former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb who is currently under house arrest.
