Former President Mohamed Nasheed departed for Poland on Wednesday to represent Maldives at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24).

Nasheed was seen off at Velana International Airport (VIA) by several leading members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) including Chairperson Hassan Latheef and Vice President Shifaz Mohamed who is also a Minister at the President's Office.

COP24 is to be held from December 2-14 in Katowice, Poland. More than 200 nations will take part in the conference which is intended to finalise the implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The former president received recognition for the speech he delivered at COP15, calling for cuts in global carbon emissions. Nasheed also orchestrated the world's first underwater cabinet meeting to emphasize the threat posed by sea level rise.
