Maldives Association of Tourism Professionals (ATP) has called for a ban on single-use plastic within the tourism industry.

The association asserted its belief in the importance of everyone in the tourism industry, at all levels, to take part in the campaign to stop single-use plastic.

ATP was founded by members of the tourism industry, who advocate for resorts, guesthouses and hotels to abandon single-use plastic.

"The steps that we take today will shape our future. Hence, we are calling on all those who are working in the tourism industry to ban usage of single-use plastic," said ATP's President Dr Hussain Sanee Umar.

He went on to say that they are aiming to achieve this by 2020, noting that developed countries have had successful campaigns to ban single-use plastic bags.

The hazard of single-use plastic bags to the oceans is greater than ever before. Dr Sanee Umar said that it is extremely important for a fragile country such as the Maldives to protect its environment by using eco-friendly solutions.
