Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was taken into surgery on Monday morning to remove kidney stones, after being admitted for over nine days.

Adeeb’s wife Mariyam Nashwa stated that the doctor informed her that Adeeb was suffering from a swollen kidney due to difficulty in passing the kidney stones even after following the prescribed medication. He was taken into surgery early Monday in order to receive laser treatment to remove the kidney stones.

“Three X-rays were taken after being admitted at IGMH,” said Adeeb’s wife. “He was taken into surgery because the stone between his kidney and the bladder remained in the same position.”

The surgery was to remove the kidney stone present in his left kidney. However, Nashwa stated that there are still two kidney stones present in his right kidney.

In addition to the kidney stones, Adeeb is also suffering from internal cysts and glaucoma.

Adeeb, has been serving his jail sentence for almost three years now, although his family has stated that the previous government had denied him access to proper health care.

Adeeb is sentenced to 33 years in jail over his involvement in the largest corruption scandal in Maldives, and for orchestrating an assassination attempt on former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
