Govt to grant MVR25 mln in 2019 funds for political parties

The government has allocated a total of MVR 25 million out of the MVR 29.6 billion state fund as the budget of political parties for 2019.

The current Political Parties Act dictates the state to set aside an amount between 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the state budget for political parties. However, the legislation does not specify a maximum limit.

MVR 24 million was allocated as the budget for political parties for this year. The funds are granted only to parties with membership surpassing 10,000, according to the number of its registered members.

The final allocations by the Elections Commission were MVR 11 million to the largest party, ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), followed by MVR 7.5 million to main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The funds are issued upon submission of the parties' audit reports as per the law.

All political parties with a registered member base larger than 10,000 is entitled to receive state funding. PPM has the largest member base with 45,865 members, while MDP comes in second with 29,756 members.
