The government has named the largest school in Maldives 'Huravee', announced the Ministry of Education on Wednesday.

According to State Minister of Education Ahmed Shafeeu, the President's Office approved the name 'Huravee' for the school developed in Neighbourhood 1 of reclaimed suburb Hulhumale. The school is already open for student registration.

The project to develop Huravee School was awarded to Amin Construction for MVR 132 million. The seven-storey complex features three blocks and 53 classrooms, out of which two have been assigned for special needs children.

With the capacity to accommodate 1,700 students, studies at Huravee School are set to commence in the upcoming academic year on January 13, 2019. While the school will initially teach from grades 1-9 and 11, studies for grades 10 and 12 will also begin in the following year.

The namesake of Huravee School is Sultan al-Ghazi al-Hassan Izzuddin al-Huravee (Dhonbandaara), the king who notably liberated Maldives from the Malabari conquest in the 18th century. The sultan was addressed as Huravee since he hailed from the island of Huraa in Kaafu Atoll.

Prior to the development of Huravee School, the largest school in Maldives was 'Rehendhi School', also located in Hulhumale.
