Convicted former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was hospitalised for emergency treatment on Friday night.

The former VP's wife Mariyam Nashwa first announced in a tweet that Adheeb's condition had deteriorated and he was rushed to the emergency.

State-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has since confirmed that Adeeb was admitted before 8:00 p.m. No further details have been disclosed.

Adeeb was brought to the hospital from prison twice last month to consult a urologist, and do some tests and scans.

The former VP's family had on multiple counts sought permission from the government to send him abroad for medical treatment, claiming that he was suffering from glaucoma, kidney stones and an internal cyst. The family also accused the authorities of not providing sufficient treatment for Adeeb, and that his eyesight was deteriorating.

Adeeb is currently serving jail time for 33 years over his involvement in the biggest corruption scandal in the country, and for orchestrating an assassination attempt on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Adeeb also has ongoing trials over official misconduct and graft charges.
