Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) requests to suspend Regional Airports Deputy Director General Ahmed Mahreen regarding the corruption case of the Maafaru International Airport in Noonu Atoll.

ACC’s President Hassan Luthufee told local media ‘Mihaaru News’ that the reason behind the suspension request was due to a complaint of the corruption currently being investigated.

Although Luthufee revealed that there is an ongoing corruption investigation, he did not reveal any additional information about it.

When asked for a confirmation of Mahreen's suspension, Civil Service Commission’s President Dr Ali Shameem stated that he is unable to confirm at the moment.

Maafaru International Airport is developed by Tuff Infrastructure Pvt Ltd. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had earlier attributed the airport, valued at USD60 million, as a donation to the Maldives by the United Arab Emirates.

Maafaru International Airport is set to feature a transit hotel, resort and can simultaneously accommodate a total of six jets.

Regional Airports have announced that scheduled flights will commence end of this year.
