Efforts are underway to reassemble the parliamentary committees, following the shift of control in parliament from the ruling coalition to the opposition alliance.

With the Supreme Court's verdict this week to reinstate the 12 legislators who were declared unseated last year over defecting from the ruling party, the opposition coalition currently holds 45 seats in parliament. Lawmakers of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) now number 40, including Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

Speaking after the sitting held Tuesday, Deputy Speaker and Hulhuhenveiru MP Moosa Manik expressed hopes to include the 12 reinstated lawmakers in the 13 committees of the parliament.

He shared that he has held discussions regarding the matter with the parliamentary groups and senior officials of political parties. Although he stated that a solution to reassemble the committees has been reached, he did not disclose further details.

Appointment of members to committees must be approved on the parliament floor, according to regulations. The last appointments were approved on June 30, 2014, and no changes have been made to the committees since.
