The parliamentary group for the opposition coalition confirmed on Wednesday the nomination of Jumhooree Party's founder and parliament representative for the constituency of Maamigili Qasim Ibrahim, for the position of parliament speaker.
In addition, Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) parliamentary representative for the constituency of Fonadhoo and Vice President of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has also stated his intention to run for the position of Parliament Speaker.
Nominations for the position come in the wake of a resolution backed by 51 signatories submitted by opposition lawmakers to the parliament on the same day, seeking to pass a motion of no confidence against Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
Meanwhile, the parliament has sent official notices to Maseeh and other lawmakers, announcing that a sitting to finalize the matter will be held on the 8th of November.
Rumours in circulation allege that MP Maseeh may submit his resignation prior to the sitting, however, the lawmaker is yet to make a formal statement on the matter.
