One of the longest serving journalists of Public Service Media (PSM), Mohamed Afsal, on Monday filed a case against three top officials of the company for spreading false defamatory rumours against him.

Afsal has requested the police to investigate the issue under the Freedom of Speech and Defamation Act, and file a criminal case at the Prosecutor General’s Office against PSM's Managing Director Ibrahim Khaleel, Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Ikram Abdul Latheef, and Director of News Fayaz Yoosuf.

They had allegedly accused Afsal, who specializes in covering political news, of leaking official PSM documents. The claims made by the three senior members during Afsal’s demotion are the basis of the case.

Afsal has denied these allegations.

Although he was demoted from the position of news editor on August 27 to a presenter of Dhivehi Raajeyge Adu, Afsal stated that his reason behind filing the case, was not the demotion itself but the rumours which damaged his reputation amongst his co-workers.

Afsal further stated that he made inquiries to the Human Resources department of PSM, asking them to clarify the reason he was demoted and has yet to receive an answer.

The three members of the state run media have not made any comments to the media regarding the issue.

Allegations of corruption have also been made against the leading members of PSM.
