The Ministry of Economic Development has refuted allegations of its involvement in the destruction of official reports and documents.

Aminath Nadhiya, spokesperson for the ministry, stated that she had no knowledge of any efforts to dispose of important documents.

She, however, highlighted that several objects and materials are being moved to storage rooms as the interior of the ministry building is being reorganised.

‘If we wanted to destroy the documents, wouldn’t we have shredded them? Those were objects moved to the storage room," said Nadhiya, referring to a video clip circulating on social media.

In the clip, trucks were being loaded with objects such as documents, printing machines and carpets outside the ministry buildings.

This denial has been made amidst allegations of several government ministries and state-run enterprises destroying key documents and reports. The opposition, which made the allegations in question, has filed an official case with the police.

Mariya Ahmed Didi, spokesperson for President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, warned that individuals carrying out such actions will be held responsible.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Muaz Ali, spokesperson for the President’s Office, has officially denied the accusations on behalf of the government, stating that no important records are being destroyed despite the disposal of certain ‘unnecessary’ documents.
