The police on Tuesday declined to comment on the case filed by lawyer and Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain, in which he accused government officials of planning to flee the country with laundered money.

In the case filed last Wednesday, Ali Hussain claimed that some government officials were planning to leave the country with money embezzled from the state as their job remunerations. The MP did not disclose details on the evidence to back his accusations, as it is currently a police case.

However, the police spokesperson declined to comment to the media on Tuesday when asked about the case. Currently it is unclear whether an investigation is underway.

Ali Hussain also stated that he has not been informed of any updates by the police.

The case was filed at the police amidst major corruption accusations against incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, top officials of his administration, and the leadership of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
