President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s lawyer Abbas Shareef has stated, in Supreme Court, that the President had accepted defeat in order to be respectful, however, it does not take away his right to file complaints over the presidential election.

President Yameen’s lawyer made the statement during the hearing on Monday, in response to an allegation by the opposition coalition legal team stating that the President cannot file a case over the election at the Supreme Court after accepting his defeat in public.

The former judge of High Court and President’s lawyer stated that the President had publicly accepted defeat in order to respect the people’s decision and added however, that it does not strip him of his rights to file complaints and begin legal work on the matter.

In response to lawyer Shareef, a lawyer of the opposition coalition, Noor-Ussalaam Aboobakur stated that the President had accepted defeat and ensured the public that the transfer of power will be peaceful by the use of public media of the Maldives and added that he had not taken back his statement prior to filing the case at the Supreme Court.

The coalition lawyer further expressed that the President’s public confession of defeat is the strongest of statements to the case and noted that there must be evidence of taking back his public confession in order to file a case at the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Ahmed Abdulla Didi, along with a five-judge bench is presiding over the case.

The final hearing of the case is scheduled for Tuesday at 1030 hours.
