MWSC, Housing Ministry fined for illegal groundwater extraction

Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has levied hefty fines on Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure for illegally extracting groundwater in capital Male’.

EPA fined the Housing Ministry for MVR 50,000 and MWSC for MVR 55,000 over their failure to seek proper authorization before extracting groundwater.

According to the regulations on extraction and use of groundwater, EPA must authorize all groundwater extraction in Male’.

Both have been given a period of one month to pay their respective fines. According to EPA, the Housing Ministry extracted water from an area near Ameenee Magu while MWSC withdrew water from the Haveeree Hingun area of Male’.
