Henveiru (North) MP Abdulla Shahid on Thursday, confirmed his pending resignation from parliament.

The former Speaker of Parliament, Shahid said in a statement given to local news Mihaaru, that his decision to resign was in lieu of the forthcoming presidential oath taking of President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu), and a subsequent wish to serve in the opposition coalition-led government.

“In order to serve in Ibu’s government, I have made the decision to resign from my position in parliament”, said Shahid.

Shahid has led an extensive career in service of his country, having served as Foreign Minister in former President Maumoon’s government, in addition to his long tenure as a lawmaker.

However, he did not divulge information regarding a particular position or sector that he wished to pursue, or had possibly been offered.

Shahid, who played an active role in ensuring the opposition’s victory from the beginning stages of MDP's campaign efforts and is currently appointed to handle matters of the transition of executive powers, was first elected to parliament alongside President-Elect Solih in the year 1995.
