The Elections Commission (EC) stated late Wednesday that it will obey the Supreme Court's order nullifying the EC's decision to reinstate 12 opposition parliamentarians that the commission had previously unseated last year.

In a press statement released after the top court ruling earlier the same night, the EC declared that it will submit to the Supreme Court's verdict and fully cooperate with the court and related authorities to follow through with it.

Furthermore, as the guardian body of political parties, the EC called on all parties and parliament members to obey the apex court's decision.

The EC had decided in a meeting held earlier on Wednesday, to revert its decision from last year to remove 12 parliamentarians that had shifted from ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to opposition parties. In the gathering, the commission also nullified its decision to hold by-elections for the expelled MPs' constituencies.

However, the Supreme Court responded with an order later the same day nullifying EC's decision. The verdict stated that only the Supreme Court of Maldives was authorised to look into the case from a constitutional perspective and reach a verdict. The order also read that neither the Elections Commission nor any other state institution was accorded the authority to make a decision while the Supreme Court was reviewing the case.
