President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday appointed Henveiru North MP Abdulla Shahid to lead the transitional efforts for the new government.

At the press conference held on Saturday, Solih’s spokesperson, Ahmed Mariya Didi, stated that former speaker of Parliament, Shahid, has been appointed to handle matters of the transition of executive powers of the outgoing President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to the President-Elect.

Mariya further stated that efforts are underway to elect the Director General of Transition, as per procedure of the constitution during the transfer of Presidency.

“The transition is being headed by politician and former speaker of parliament, Shahid. A Director General of Transition will be appointed under him…” said the spokesperson.

The post of the Director General of Transition is appointed by the Civil Service Commission as per the request of the President-Elect. The role of the Director General is to organize security measures, living expenses, travel expenses, the president’s office and to source the facilities needed at the office.

The oath-taking of the President-Elect, while slated for November, has raised concerns from the public with regards to the date of the ceremony, to which Mariya responded by stating that even though people are talking about the date, no communication had been established with the government in regards to the ceremony. Mariya added that it is the responsibility of the government to adhere to the procedures stipulated in the constitution.

Speaking about the efforts to grant the freedom of jailed political leaders, Mariya stated that the incumbent president currently has all necessary powers and declared that Solih is ready to cooperate regarding the matter. Mariya revealed that the President-Elect had urged the President to free the jailed leaders, during their meeting post the election.
