Incumbent president concedes defeat with public apology

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has addressed the country and conceded defeat with a public apology.

Addressing the public at the President’s Office, President Yameen noted on the pledges fulfilled during his 5-year presidency term. President Yameen expressed his priority to protect the integrity of the people and stated that he had implemented the Anti-Defamation Act in order to eradicate slander and libel.

President Yameen expressed his belief in the progress made during the current administration and thanked everyone who voted for ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

“I could not have achieved what I did without the support of my team and my wife, Madam Fathimath. Cabinet of ministers, members of the parliament and council members of PPM, thank you for the teamwork. This was a team effort, I thank everyone who helped me on my journey to progress”, said Yameen.

President Yameen conceded defeat, stating that the people of the Maldives had made their decision and apologized to the nation. Acknowledging that the island nation had made its decision, he added that he would continue to respect the people's choice.

He further urged the people not to create any conflict post-presidential election and assured that transfer of power would be peaceful.

President Yameen congratulated opposition coalition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on the electoral race win and expressed hope in the coalition administration to continue making progress for a better future for all Maldivians.
