Election agent to opposition coalition's presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu), lawyer Hisaan Hussain, has revealed that the Elections Commission (EC) has assured that the commission will not release the preliminary results of the upcoming presidential elections via a tablet.

Speaking at a press conference held by the coalition, renowned lawyer Hisaan stated that EC had assured to announce the preliminary results as per any other election, by counting the votes at the ballot box and announcing it verbally.

Opposition had earlier alleged that the preliminary results will be generated by the tablet.

“Election fraud is a crime. The General Elections Act also states that announcing wrong results of the election is unlawful”, said Hisaan.

Hisaan further called on all election officials to ensure that the election procedures are carried out in accordance with the Constitution, and assured that necessary action will be taken against those who do not abide by the regulations.

The lawyer further expressed concerns to the commission over announcing a different result from the one revealed at the ballot box. EC had responded to the concerns and established a media centre at every ballot box to accommodate the media during the results announcement.

During the press conference, MDP deputy chairperson Ali Niyaz stated that EC had assured the opposition that the commission will work to gain the trust of the opposition.
