Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed revealed that the government is considering to develop an overwater shopping centre at Maldives' main airport.

While speaking at the special ceremony held to inaugurate outlets from various franchise restaurants, Minister Saeed said that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's vision for Velana International Airport (VIA) includes an overwater shopping centre.

Although Saeed disclosed that they are working on this project, he did not reveal any further details related to it during his speech.

However, while speaking to local media Mihaaru, Saeed stated that the project will start once the new terminal is complete. He added that further information about the new terminal will be revealed later.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) had revealed that the new terminal will take about three years to be completed. According to MACL, once complete, the terminal can cater to 7.5 million tourists annually.
