Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) declared that Maafushi Prison has been placed under a state of emergency since Monday morning.
Ahmed Luqman, Senior Prisons Officer of Maafushi Prison, stated that MCS is not yet able to disclose information regarding the reason for the state of emergency in the prison.
This declaration was made in the wake of special precautionary measures implemented as part of a strategy to centrally control security operations during the elections, which are slated for September 23.
The changes brought about by Commissioner of Prisons, Ahmed Shihaan includes the appointment of Superintendent Ibrahim Mohamed Didi to the position of Director of Prisons in capital Male' and CPO Ahmed Riza as Director of Prisons in Maafushi. In addition to this, two Superintendents, Moosa Anwar and Shaaheen Ali have also been stationed in the MCS Headquarters in the capital.
MCS has stated that similar precautionary measures are taken prior to every presidential election in order to prevent unrest within the prisons.
