Minister of Economic Development, Mohamed Saeed has refuted the pledges made to develop Ihavandhippolhhu by the opposition coalition leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu).

Saeed, in a tweet responding to an article published by local news media Mihaaru, emphasized that the opposition coalition does not have the capability to carry out the development of Ihavandhippolhu and that it will, in fact, be developed by President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

Ibu made these pledges during a campaign stop in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll. He pledged to make numerous developments to Ihavandhippolhu should he win the upcoming election, including developing tourism, a tranship harbour and the establishment of an airport that can easily be accessed by all the islands within the atoll.

Ihavandhippolhu being the northernmost geographical atoll in the Maldives that comprises a part of the administrative Haa Alifu Atoll, Ibu recognized its geographical importance and asserting that it should be utilized to its fullest.

He also shed light on the 'I-Havan' project proposed by the current government which is still yet to commence. 'I-Havan' is a project an integrated project that will transform the Maldivian economy.

Saeed pointed out that those who keep calling investors to boycott the Maldives cannot run developmental projects.

Without stating any specifics, the Minister claimed that there are some people within MDP who had vowed not to develop Ihavandhippolhu.

Speaking in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu in July 2017, President Yameen had unveiled plans to build an airport in Maafinolhu to aid the 'I-Havan' project. He also revealed the necessary reclamation of land to support the project. However, external pressure hindered the fruition of these projects.
