President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has declined the invitation by local media Raajje TV for a presidential debate.

The opposition-aligned Raajje TV's CEO Hussain Fiyaaz revealed that though the opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) accepted the invitation, the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) stated that it cannot make the time for it.

However, Raajje TV has since requested PPM via a letter to reconsider the decision as the ruling party has already settled payments for the debate, according to Fiyaaz.

Fiyaaz noted that they have not received any response from PPM yet.

Maldives National University (MNU) is also hosting a presidential debate. While President Yameen has agreed for this debate, Ibu declined the invitation for it. Though MNU has not made any statements regarding the debate, questions have been raised whether it would be held.

The presidential election is to be held on September 23, with President Yameen and Ibu as the only contestants.
