Economic ministry announced Wednesday that 750 businesses in capital Male had been inspected with action taken against 20 violators over the past five days.

Speaking at the press conference regarding the on-going operation to cease expatriates working in violation of regulations at businesses, registrar of companies Mariyam Visam stated that the ministry inspected every business brought forward through complaints, and that ten businesses are inspected daily.

Elaborating on the operation conducted jointly by Maldives Police Service and Maldives Immigration, Visam added that all businesses had previously been stipulated to register and unregistered businesses had been fined MVR 10,000.

“(We look into) whether active businesses have been registered and follow regulations. The highest amount of complaints we receive concern expatriates working at retail enterprises,” she said.

Speaking during the press conference, housing ministry’s executive coordinator Abdulla Shareef disclosed that the government has confiscated the goods of traders conducting business illegally on the roads of the market area. He added that some of the goods have been destroyed.

“We still see traders conducting business on the road. We’re working with the police to take action against them,” said Shareef.

The head of Maldives Immigration’s monitoring department Abdulla Waheed further revealed that 56 expatriates working illegally as cashiers in stores have been detained by Immigration during the operations carried out this year. Currently, operations are focused on the Travellers Market on the northern front of Male.
