Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) refuted allegations of negligence regarding the medication of jailed former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
MCS' defence comes amidst concerns raised by Gayoom's lawyers over the authorities' refusal to shift the ailing former president to house arrest.
In a statement released late Saturday, MCS stated that special arrangements were made for Gayoom ever since his detention commenced at Maafushi Prison. According to MCS, the arrangements include a location where Gayoom could stay in ease, daily visits from his wife and former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim to check on his condition, and an around-the-clock escort.
The service further stated that Gayoom has access to doctors and his medication as required, asserting that MCS has not been negligent on any counts regarding medical aid for the former president.
The 80-year-old Gayoom is currently serving a year and seven months in jail on obstruction of justice charges, while the state has also levied terrorism charges against him in connection with the alleged coup of February 1. Meanwhile, his family and lawyers continue to request the authorities to transfer him to house arrest due to his poor health.
