A member of Rajya Sabah, the upper house of the Parliament of India, declared on Friday that India must take action against Maldives, if the results of the upcoming President Election are meddled with.

Subramanian Swamy stated in a tweet that "India should invade Maldives if rigging of election takes place." Along with this statement, he tweeted a link of an article from local news outlet Raajje MV, detailing his meeting with former president of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed.

During a trip to Sri Lanka last week, Swamy met Nasheed and discussed the political situation of Maldives. The meeting was confirmed by both parties via Twitter on Wednesday.

"In Colombo today I had a chance meet with Fmr Maldive President Naseed. He is apprehensive of gross rigging in their forthcoming election. India cannot allow that as a neighbour and also since current usurper President Yamin has humiliated Indians recently. We need an action pla," Swamy tweeted after his meeting with Nasheed.

Nasheed tweeted after the meeting that they had "discussed the political situation in Maldives, the upcoming presidential elections and our concerns on how President Yameen intends to rig Sep 23rd election".

India has been expressing concerns over the situation in Maldives since the landmark ruling passed by the Supreme Court on February 1, in which the apex court ordered to free political prisoners and reinstate ousted legislators. The government was heavily criticized by several international bodies for not following through with the ruling.
