The number of Maldives Police Service officers stationed in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale has been increased.

Prior to this development, only 80 police officers were stationed in Hulhumale, which boasts a population of about 70,000 people. According to sources, the number of officers allocated for the suburb has been hiked to about a 100.

Recently, a lot of concerns were raised due to the upsurge in criminal activities and road accidents in the suburb.

While Chief Operating Officer for Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Ahmed Bunyaamin, had previously told local media Mihaaru that the number of officers were to be increased, he explained that they had been unable to do so as there had not been a specific building allocated for the police.

Bunyaamin also said that within the next two months, a new police building will be completed near Hulhumale Central Park.

Police spokesperson reported that they are working to strengthen the police service in Hulhumale.

The police had previously revealed that they were under-resourced in Hulhumale and stationed in a section of HDC's building without a "jail area" allocated to detain arrested suspects.
