Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) and Maldives Ports Ltd (MPL) on Tuesday denied allegations that the two state-run companies were coercing employees to re-register for the upcoming Presidential Election.
Recent rumours accused MACL, the operator of Velana International Airport, and MPL, the largest operator of ports across Maldives, of compelling their staff to re-register their voting centres.
Responding to the allegations, an official of MACL stated that while the company is conducting a re-registration activity for its workforce, there was no coercion to do so.
"[Elections Commission] always keeps a ballot box at Hulhule (VIA). Some employees choose to re-register because it's easier to vote [at VIA] while they're on duty, and the queue is shorter."
The spokesperson of MPL also refuted rumours of coercing staff to re-register.
"No obligations are enforced on the staff. They do not have to re-register [if they do not wish to]."
For the elections slated for September 23, there is an estimated 263,000 eligible voters, with 483 voting stations to be set up. Around 3,000 officials are involved, under the EC's supervision, to manage election preparations and proceedings.
