The Election Commission has come to a decision in providing aid to voters with physical disabilities on Sunday.
EC's President Ahmed Shareef said that those with disabilities can choose anyone to aid them, as long as both place their ballots in the same box.
The initial regulation dictated that only EC officials may assist those with physical disabilities. However, in the wake of criticism and accusations that it was an attempt at manipulating votes, the EC has announced the above amendment.
While discussing this new amendment at a press conference, Shareef said that this change was brought about after discussions with the president of the Visually Impaired Society of Maldives.
The officials at voting stations will check whether the voter is physically impaired to vote. In addition, they will also take down the details of the person chosen to aid the voter.
