Amidst growing concerns among journalists, Ministry of Home Affairs has reversed its decision to tighten the criteria for news media editors.

The ministry had ratified an amendment to local news and media regulations back in February 2018. The amendment stated that any editor of a local news media outlet must hold a degree in journalism or any relevant field, in addition to five years of work experience.

Earlier the regulation dictated that editors must only meet one of the mentioned requirements.

The home ministry had conditioned editors employed at the time to complete a degree in a relevant field within 18 months post ratification of the amendment.

However, the ministry on Sunday announced the reversal of the recently ratified amendment. The current requirements, however, now dictates editors to hold a degree in journalism or have seven years of experience in a relevant field.
