President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Sunday departed on an official visit to Shaviyani Atoll islands of Bileffahi, Kan’ditheemu, Funadhoo and Milandhoo.
According to the President’s Office, President Yameen will take part in the ceremony to mark the completion of beach protection project in Bileffahi Island, and inaugurate the harbour at Kan’ditheemu Island. During the president’s official trip to Shaviyani Atoll islands, he is also scheduled to take part in the ceremony to mark the completion of the airport land reclamation project, and commencement of the runway project in Funadhoo Island.
The president will conclude his official visit on Tuesday after inaugurating the sewerage system at Milandhoo Island.
President Yameen had earlier visited islands in capital Kaafu atoll to celebrate the completion of infrastructural projects in islands, and to meet their residents and councilors.
President's Office's spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali had confirmed that the visits were only official trips, and not part of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s ongoing presidential campaign to elect Yameen for a second term.
Meanwhile, PPM has commenced activities to reelect President Yameen in the election slated for September. Under the campaign name of "Raees [President] Yameen 2018", cabinet ministers and government-aligned parliamentarians are carrying out door-to-door promotional activities.
