Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), in their manifesto for the upcoming presidential elections, has pledged to allow expatriates to serve as justices in courts across Maldives.

Presenting the 2018 opposition manifesto, lawyer Hisaan Hussein noted that as the country allows educated and experienced foreign teachers, doctors and engineers to serve, it must also allow expatriate justices in courts in order to make verdicts more reliable to the public.

The MDP Manifesto also states that, in an opposition administration, the term of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) will be reduced to a period of three years to maintain the public’s trust in the courts of Maldives. According to the Constitution, JSC members currently have a term of up to five years.

The main opposition’s manifesto also pledges to make the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) an independent body, establish a bar council and create a public defender office for those who do not have the means to procure legal assistance.

Hisaan stated that, in an opposition administration, no injustice will be tolerated and that the government will ensure that justice is served.

MDP commenced its third special congress at AA. Ukulhas on Friday.

In addition to the MDP party leadership and parliament members, the largest opposition party in the Maldivian political arena welcomed over 1,500 attendees from different islands and atolls across the Maldives.
