Australia has raised concerns, claiming that the Maldivian government's current actions would influence the upcoming Presidential Election in September.

According to the statement released by the Australian High Commission, the government of Australia were growing increasingly concerned due to the actions of the Maldivian administration, which "undermine democratic institutions and reduce the prospect that the upcoming Presidential Election can free and fair".

The statement was tweeted by Bryce Hutchersson, the High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Ambassador to the Maldives.

Additionally, as an Indian neighbour, Australia urged the Maldivian government "to respect the fundamental rights and freedom of all Maldivians, including freedom of assembly and speech and the right to participate fully in election processes."

The statement called on the Maldives to release political prisoners and to permit opposition activities. Australia pointed out that opposition's role was essential for any election to be credible.

"Australia will continue to monitor the situation in Maldives closely in the lead-up to the Presidential Elections."

Australia joins the long list of countries and international bodies condemning the Maldives for its actions following the alleged coup in February. Several international entities have been calling to release political prisoners and to ensure a free and fair election.
