The first readings of the government-lobbied amendments proposed to the Presidential Election Act and Elections General Act, are scheduled for the parliament sitting on Monday.

Two bills to amend the Presidential Election Act were submitted separately by ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s parliamentary group leader Ahmed Nihan, and Fares Maathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef.

The amendment to the Elections General Act was submitted by Holhudhoo MP Ali Mohamed.

With the Presidential Election 2018 slated for coming September, the government had earlier announced that it would seek to amend the Acts on elections. However, details of the proposed bills have not been disclosed yet.

In addition to the three bills, President Abdulla Yameen's nomination of Mohamed Hussain Shareef as the Maldives' Non-Resident Ambassador to Russia will also be forwarded to the parliamentary committee for review during Monday's session.

Shareef is currently the Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka.
