The Presidential Election slated for this coming September should not be a decision taken under a court order, declared President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Sunday.

He made the remark during the ceremony to mark the completion of Maafushi Island's beach protection project, during his current official trip to three islands of capital Kaafu Atoll.

In his address, the president noted that the turning point from the end of his first term to the next regime was quickly approaching. He proclaimed that the election should not be a vote finalised by a court verdict.

It is noteworthy that the results of the first round of the Presidential Election 2013 in which Yameen had run, had been annulled by the Supreme Court over complaints submitted by Jumhooree Party regarding the voters' list. The following rounds were then held according to guidelines issued by the apex court.

Highlighting the developmental projects undertaken by his administration, Yameen stated that progress was not merely a word on paper, but an achievement through intelligence and hard work.

He declared that the unveiling of the landmark China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, being developed between capital Male and airport island Hulhule, would prove that such developmental projects could be accomplished and continued in Maldives.

"This vote (the Presidential Election) must be given to one chosen wholeheartedly; one who would realise the people's hopes, wishes and progress, one who in the past has shown the capability and spirit and daring to accomplish them."

With the assurance that his administration would continue to meet the expectations of Maafushi's residents, Yameen further announced that the government would also return the land plot of Maafushi's juvenile rehabilitation centre to the people.

The president is currently on a one-day official trip to islands of Thulusdhoo, Maafushi and Guraidhoo. He earlier inaugurated the new harbour of Thulusdhoo, and is scheduled to inaugurate Guraidhoo's clean drinking water services before returning to the capital later.
