The latest statistics by the Ministry of Tourism indicate a decline in tourism arrivals for May this year.
According to statistics revealed by the ministry, only 16,927 Chinese tourists visited the Maldives in May, leading to a decline of 27 percent in tourist arrivals.
While only 92,913 tourists in total visited in May, a 0.6 percent decline has been noted, in comparison to the same period last year.
Statistics also reveal that though 45,291 tourists visited from Asia and the Pacific region, overall numbers show a decline of 8.8 percent.
Inversely, the incoming numbers from the European region increased by 12 percent, with 40,056 visitors from Europe gracing Maldivian shores last month.
The tourism ministry's data shows that until May, bed occupancy numbers in the country are at 42,680 and counting.
