Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was shifted to Maafushi Prison on Thursday.
He had been detained in Dhoonidhoo detention centre since his arrest on February 5, accused of conspiring to overthrow the government. He was transferred to Maafushi Prison sometime Thursday afternoon, according to his lawyers.
Maumoon, along with the Supreme Court's Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed, was convicted of obstructing justice on Wednesday, after the Criminal Court found him guilty of deliberately refusing to comply with the police's order to hand over his mobile phone for investigation. The three were sentenced to a year, seven months and six days in jail.
In addition to the jail sentence, the court also annulled Maumoon, Saeed and Hameed's licenses to practise law and give religious sermons.
While Maumoon was earlier kept in Dhoonidhoo, the two justices have been detained in Maafushi.
