Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has postponed the launch of their presidential campaign, following the jail sentences imposed Wednesday on former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed of the Supreme Court.

MDP had previously scheduled the inauguration of its "Jazeera Raajje" campaign, to be held across the Maldives via Facebook Live, on Wednesday night. Preparations for the event have already been completed in several islands.

However, the main opposition announced late Wednesday that it has decided to postpone the launch to Thursday night, as a sign of standing in solidarity with the convicted former president and judges.

MDP revealed that it made the decision on request of their sole presidential candidate and former president, Mohamed Nasheed.

Maumoon, Saeed and Hameed stand convicted of obstructing justice, after the Criminal Court found them guilty of deliberately refusing to comply with the police's order to hand over their mobile phones for investigation, after their arrests on February 5.
