A special jail has been established for inmates who do community service.

According to a statement released by Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure, the "Male Ahuluveri Marukaz" detention centre was developed under the Prison and Parole Act, which will be managed by Maldives Correctional Services.

Corrections' Information Officer Ahmed Luqman said that only inmates who are doing community work in capital Male would be staying there. He added that this centre can accommodate a large number of inmates simultaneously.

Inmates have recently begun construction work at the Male Ring Road and the Male-Hulhule Bridge in the capital Male. They are allowed to work on contract basis on select projects, and they are compensated for their work.
